Scalp Micropigmentation for Trichotillomania

Trichotillomania disorder, also known as trich, is a condition where someone can’t resist the urge to pull out their hair. This can be just the hair on the head, or other places such as eyebrows and eyelashes.

Scalp Micropigmentation for Trichotillomania

Trich occurs more commonly in teenagers and young adults and affects girls more than boys.

It’s not entirely clear what causes trichotillomania, but it has been connected to stress, obsessive compulsive behaviour (OCD), changes in hormone levels and as a reaction to emotional trauma.

The Process

At Scalp Perfection, our scalp micropigmentation (SMP) process for trichotillomania is designed to restore confidence by camouflaging areas of hair loss and creating a natural, even look across the scalp without the need for surgery or downtime.

Step 1: Consultation & Mapping

We start with a detailed consultation to understand the pattern and extent of hair loss caused by trichotillomania. During this stage, we assess your scalp condition and design a personalised treatment plan including pigment tone, density, and coverage area to achieve a soft, natural finish that complements your skin tone and remaining hair.

Step 2: Pigment Application & Layering
Over a series of 2–4 sessions (depending on the affected areas), our specialists use precision micro-needles to deposit tiny pigment dots into the scalp, recreating the appearance of natural hair follicles. Each session gradually builds up density and texture to blend seamlessly with your existing hair and conceal any patchiness or thinning.
Step 3: Aftercare & Maintenance
After your treatment, we’ll provide tailored aftercare instructions to ensure proper healing and lasting results. You’ll receive advice on scalp care, sun exposure, and activities to avoid during recovery. Maintenance touch-ups may be recommended every few years to preserve your natural-looking appearance.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can Trichotillomania be treated?

The condition is usually treated by a form of CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) called habit reversal training. This treats the sufferer to replace this ‘bad habit’ with a less harmful one.

If you are concerned about yourself or someone else suffering with on obsessive hair pulling disorder such as trichotillomania, please contact your doctor in the first instance.

Scalp Micropigmentation after Trichotillomania

Trichotillomania can cause permanent damage to hair follicles, due to the repeated pulling out of hair. These damaged hair follicles may either regrow very slowly or not at all, leaving bald patches on the scalp. This can leave the sufferer with low esteem and confidence issues.

Scalp micropigmentation is not just a hair tattoo. It is an effective method of replicating hair follicles that match your natural pigments and disguise bald patches or give the effect of a shaved head. The treatment also will not affect any hair regrowth that you may have.

Micropigmentation for facial trichotillomania

If trichotillomania affects your beard, we can use micropigmentation to ‘fill in’ any patches, producing an almost undetectable natural looking result.
